Exclusive: 'The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers' Comics Being Collected, Timed To New Animated Series
With cartoons the gamey flavour is both more pronounced and more prolonged, as the illustrator settles into the style that had been implied from the beginning. The cartoonish imagination, now in total command of itself, plays more freely, more abundantly; which is the case here. You may wonder how a cartoon strip about three potheads could survive the s, let alone the 80s. And there are many who consider the entire franchise redundant from the start; antipathy to cannabis use often being an indicator. I have always looked indulgently on the antics of the Freak Brothers, although some of the early efforts are decidedly embarrassing, and best viewed as historical artefacts, like inept cave-paintings. But once Shelton and Sheridan and, after the latter's death, Mavrides found their line, the strip took off.

But somehow, they've managed to survive beyond that time, and remain in print even today. Their first adventure appeared in Feds 'n' Heads, a counter-culture publication that is still reprinted from time to time. In , Shelton and three college buddies, Jack Jackson, Dave Moriarty and Fred Todd, moved to San Francisco and founded Rip Off Press, which became one of the major comix publishers — and which is today one of the few still producing new comic books.
Created by famed cartoonist Gilbert Shelton in , the comics followed the drug-addled adventures of Freewheelin' Franklin, Phineas, and Fat Freddy around the world. Now, they're being rounded up for a new four-volume collection of their entire run. But that's not all, because there's a Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers animated series on the way with quite an impressive voice cast. Get the details below. Here's the official synopsis of their first adventure:.
