An adult movie theater is a euphemistic term for a movie theater dedicated to the exhibition of pornographic films. Adult movie theaters show pornographic films primarily for either a respectively heterosexual or homosexual audience. For the patrons, rules are generally less strict regarding partial- or full-nudity and public masturbation or sex , and such behavior may be condoned explicitly or simply tolerated by the management. Before the VCR and, later, the Internet, a movie theatre or cinema house was often the only location where people could see hardcore erotic films. The spread of home videos and later of Internet pornography has led to a drastic reduction in the number of adult theatres.

Erin Barry, a fourth-year PhD student in history, researches the history of adult movie theaters during the heyday of the American sexual revolution. In the 60s and 70s, adult movie theaters provided increasingly public spaces for people to see pornographic materials, resulting in a series of court cases that had significant ramifications for the legal separation of the public and private spheres. Owen Bathhouse Closure , in which the San Francisco Department of Public Health sought to close fourteen bathhouses, sex clubs, bookstores, and adult movie theaters to curb the transmission of AIDS in the city. She presented this paper at the first Queer History Conference in San Francisco this year to an audience of activists and academics, many of whom were around for the closures and still remembered their impact on the community. In her current dissertation project, Barry is interested in looking at adult movie theaters as part of a broader conversation about how we define and regulate obscenity. Even the idea of what counts as porn turns out not to be as clear-cut as one might imagine.
O nce a fixture in every major metropolis and most main streets, the adult theater has all but disappeared from our modern urban landscape. Adult films, of course, are as old as film itself. For the first odd years, however, screening them was something of a problem.
