Steel sheets are conventionally manufactured by continuous casting, hot rolling, cold rolling and annealing. However, recent progress in producing steel sheets in pilot-scale twin roll strip casters has stimulated efforts to convert such devices to full commercial production. The following sections and papers provide insights into this interesting processing alternative specifically regarding microstructure, texture, ridging and properties. Strip casting provides some basic metallurgical and commercial improvements compared to conventional steel sheet processing methods.

A student dipped the strip of metal X in a blue coloured salt solution YSO 4. After some time, a layer of metal Y from the salt solution is formed on the surface of metal strip X. Metal X is used in galvanisation whereas metal Y is used in making electric wires.
Strip refers to steel and non-ferrous products that are rolled into coils, for example, hot-rolled strip, which is used as primary material for cold-rolled sheets. Hot-rolled strip is produced in thicknesses up to approximately 15 mm and in widths up to approximately 2, mm. Hot-rolled plate is sheet cut out of hot-rolled strip and is up to approximately 15 mm thick and up to approximately 2, mm wide. In addition, there are many national standards that have aligned more and more with the international standard ISO over the last few years. The characteristic values defined in these standards and described in their determination methods are comparable in their end results.
